Bagnall comes clean

19 Jan 2011

Bagnall UK has embarked on one of its biggest, single asbestos removal and demolition jobs at the Gerard’s Soap Works site in Wellington Street, Nottingham.

The site was built in the 1890s in the Basford suburb of Nottingham, just north west of the city centre and as well as being a major landmark in the city, it was also a major employer of local people.

The 14 acre (57,000sqm) site took water from the nearby River Lean for its manufacturing processes and was in full operation up until 1921 when it was severely damaged in a fire. The site was rebuilt and expanded and remained in production through an acquisition by Cussons (makers of the well known Imperial Leather soap brand) in 1955 and their subsequent acquisition in 1975 by Paterson Zochonis who later became PZ Cussons.

In 2005 PZ Cussons took the decision to close the plant, moving its manufacturing facilities to Thailand and the site has sat empty ever since.
Acquired by CBRE, the site is now undergoing demolition and asbestos removal by Bagnall UK, part of Lexia Solutions Group to get the site ready for redevelopment.

The 16 week, £600k project is one of Bagnall’s biggest ever single projects with nine full time operatives on site throughout the works under the supervision of project manager, Roy Clarke. Bagnall’s sister company, asbestos removal company Rhodar, is helping with some of the asbestos removal work, although Bagnall is a licensed asbestos removal contractor in its own right.

The project involves asbestos removal from across the site and the safe removal and disposal of all asbestos waste, followed by complete demolition to provide a clean area ready for building work.

All reusable waste including rubble, concrete, bricks, steel and timber is being segregated and recycled including crushing of concrete slabs and similar materials which will be left on site for use in the redevelopment process.
