Bagnall (UK) Ltd makes way for £20 million project – the largest facelift in the town’s history for many years.

Our specialist team was responsible for removing all asbestos from the existing supermarket and deconstructing approximately 50 per cent of the building, along with a major hard/soft strip to retain the current structure and facilitate the new Market Hall development.

The existing Market Hall was then carefully demolished under strict guidelines to make way for a new car park providing much needed 1,500 car spaces to serve the new Market Hall and ASDA superstore.

This project was delivered on a very tight time schedule to meet with the client’s key requirements, achieved by a conscious effort from all Bagnall staff.

Springfield’s, near Preston, has provided nuclear fuel fabrication services since the mid-1940's. In fact, it was the first plant in the world to produce fuel for a commercial power station.

The site has witnessed many changes over the years and today it is run and operated by Springfield’s Fuels Ltd, under the management of Westinghouse Electric UK Ltd.

Bagnall (UK) Ltd was instructed to carry out demolition on a large three-story structure sited in a low level contact area. Although working in a low risk part of the site, Bagnall ensured all materials removed were carefully monitored for levels of radiation before being allowed to be taken off site.

Some 700 tonnes of steel work was removed along with 2,000 tonnes of brick and concrete. This was followed by the removal of 10,000 cubic meters of ground floor slab and a reduced dig which led to 10,000 cubic meters of materials and topsoil being imported to level and made ready for landscaping.

These works had to be planned carefully to comply with BNFL nuclear licence.

As part of the commitment of its better housing policy, North East Derbyshire District Council hired Bagnall (UK) Ltd to provide specialist asbestos removal and demolition services.

Bagnall was tasked with demolishing 48 existing houses to make way for more modern, affordable homes. Each old property required careful removal of different asbestos types before any demolition could take place for new works to begin.

Health and safety requirements for this type of project are a particular issue and constant monitoring was required. Bagnall also ensured all key personnel involved in the project were kept continually updated on progress.

Following the disastrous fire at one of Warrington’s oldest and most successful businesses that destroyed the building at the head office of G&J Greenall Warrington, Bagnall (UK) Ltd, after a stringent tender process was appointed the task to demolish 2 x large warehouse buildings, which had in place asbestos and asbestos cement clad roofs.

The project was by no means easy due to products and existing equipment being contaminated by fallen asbestos due to the collapse of the fragile roofs.

The structure first had be cleaned before being lifted up and cleared away from the contaminated area and then cut up and removed from site, once the 1000 tonnes of steelwork and redundant plant was removed from site the next stage was to clean up the contaminated debris which also contained alcohol and glass bottles, some 8000 tonnes of contaminated waste had to be removed from site in accordance with Environment Agency requirements.

On completion of the project the site was left with clear clean slab to enable construction of new warehouses
